A United Voice Against Violence
South Bend Group Violence Intervention (SBGVI) unites community leaders around a common goal: to stop gun violence and keep South Bend’s highest risk citizens alive and out of prison. We discourage violence by conveying a resolute stance against its tolerance, while extending pathways for individuals to break free from the cycle of violence.
- A credible, moral message from community leaders against violence.
- A clear message from law enforcement about the consequences of future violence.
- A genuine offer of help from social services for those who want it.
Our Strategy
Deter further violence by delivering a clear message that violence will not be tolerated, while also providing support and opportunities for individuals to exit the cycle of violence and access resources for positive change
Evidence-based and community focused framework developed by the National Network for Safe Communities at John Jay College of Criminal Justice
Focus on ‘group’ rather than ‘gang’ to ensure a more inclusive understanding of how serious violence take shape in our neighborhoods
Partnership of Community Members, Social Services, and Law Enforcement Agencies
Face-to-face meetings between partnership groups and group members, to deliver their messages and request the attendees to share what they have heard with their respective groups
Targeted visits to higher risk individuals deployed rapidly to interrupt violence cycles and address retaliation, mitigate hot spots, and engage “impact players”
